My honest opinion of social media

I don’t really know when it started- the addiction to social media.

Was it when Instagram introduced the unlimited feed?

Was it when TikTok bombarded us with short-form video?

Was it when the algorithm started sending me dog videos?

I can’t pinpoint exactly when it started, but maybe that’s the point. It’s been a slow burn this entire time. Introducing small, subtle changes so we adjust… and then crave it even more.

Even as I’m writing this, I can’t help but notice the urge I feel to check my phone. To log into Instagram and “catch up” on my feed for the day (knowing damn well I’m really just looking for a quick dopamine hit).

I hate it. I love it. And then I hate it again.

Social media is like being in a relationship you *know* you shouldn’t be in, but you stay anyway. Because there are no other options, right? Especially as a business owner. How do I market my business? Everyone is passing me up!! Am I missing out? What would I be without it? Who would I be without it?

Ah, that’s the question. Who would we be without social media?

Would we read more books?

Would we join a golf league?

Would we water our plants?

Would we go to that networking event?

Would we learn how to cook?

Would we call our parents?

Would we start a podcast?

Would we go for a walk?

Would we write more?

Would we clean the dishes?

Would we be present?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say yes. Yes to all of those things. Yes to whatever it is you feel -deep down- that social media has taken from you. And before you feel the shame and guilt wash over (because I’ve been there), please know that this is not your fault. It’s not a lack of willpower or discipline. Social media is designed to keep us coming back for more, and shit- it’s working.

So how do we change this as business owners? What’s the next best course of action? Is deleting social media altogether the answer? Is it setting stricter boundaries? (We all know the time limits on apps don't work). I don’t know. I truly just don’t know.

And maybe that’s one of the reasons why I wrote this today. To see if any of you are feeling the same way. To hold each other accountable and learn from one another. Because although I know we all struggle with this, I can’t help but feel entirely alone.

So I’d love to know- How do you feel about social media? Do you find it helpful? Has it held you back in any way? Have you found any creative ways to market your business outside of social media? I'd love to share these results!

If you're struggling to find inspiration for what to post on social media, here are five ideas you can totally steal: Tell the story of how and why you started your business. Do you have a picture of when you first started that you can post? Hop on stories and celebrate a client win! Keep it light! Post a series of memes your ideal client would find funny. What's a common objection that keeps your idea client from working with you? Can you call this out in a post and handle the objection?...

You might have 10s, 100s, 1,000s of unread emails sitting in your inbox right now. They're probably from companies you bought from long ago, Or creators and mentors you wanted to learn from and keep up with. But the amount of emails they send is overwhelming. They're promotional and spammy. They provide no value to you other than a discount here and there. It's because of those unopened emails that you're probably thinking- "Email marketing is dead. No one wants spammed with a ton of emails"...

A few things I've been working on in my business + some memes for you heading into the weekend ✨💫 01. I've been playing around with posting on Instagram and LinkedIn again. Not in the way I used to, though. I'm calling this *calm marketing* - a marketing strategy that feels authentic to me and my community (aka, YOU). I'll post when I want to. I'll post HOW I want to. And if that means never creating another 7 second reel again- so be it. You can follow me on Instagram: @emilytbeal 🤠🤠 02....
